Welcome to THE INDUSTRY NERD… the world of entertainment from a byte-sized perspective.
Ever since I was a little kid growing up in the deep south, I’ve been enamored by the film industry. While my ordinary world was often mundane, repressive, and acutely traumatizing… the stories, characters, and circumstances that I saw playing out on the silver screen were nothing short of spellbinding.
It wasn’t long until I picked up a DV camera and started cranking out home movies – something that would lead me to attend film school at both Chapman University and USC School of Cinematic Arts. But while I quickly worked to decode the basics of filmmaking on a practical level, it was ultimately the enigma of Hollywood itself that interested me the most. The scale and grandiosity of the endeavor continuously blew my mind. It was a playground of creative expression, a celebration of the human condition, and an intersection of art and commerce at the highest level imaginable.
Now, while my professional and personal life took a turn away from the industry, my passion for visual storytelling, cinematic achievement, and the dysfunctional town that brings it all to life has never waned. Of course, Hollywood has had a rough few years. Greed, hubris, and short sighted decision making have damaged the once triumphant industry (and the creative/business communities that run it).
But Hollywood has always been about redemption. About the flawed hero who – despite his shortcomings – picks himself up at the 11th hour and overcomes his demons once and for all. So I believe that with enough hard work, prudent strategy, and sincere recommitment to the boundless creativity that made the film industry so great in the first place… Hollywood can make a comeback for the ages.
And I want to be here for that comeback: cheering it along, but also calling it out in a constructive way when necessary. So join me – THE INDUSTRY NERD – as we celebrate, analyze, criticize, and occasionally take the piss out of my favorite industry on planet earth.
